In the beginning …

The baseball team at Mechanicsburg is looking forward to another very successful season. After last year’s C.A.C. Championship team, Coach Shirley's 'Cats are working extra hard to prove last years team wasn't a fluke. They have already been practicing out in the parking lot and down at the field for a chance to bring the C.A.C. crown to M'Burg for the second straight season.

‘Cats Defeat CV 13 – 4

Maybe the Cumberland Valley baseball team should play all their games on the road this season.  Their five wins have all been away.

The Eagles continued to remain winless at home as they dropped a 13-4 decision to the Mechanicsburg wildcats yeaterday in the Capital Area Conference.

The Wildcats got on the scoreboard in the first inning when Greg Wagner walked and Steve Banks bunted.  The throw to second base was low and all hands were safe.

Slugger Ron Lowe walked and the bases were loaded.  With Joe Shamansky at bat, Wagner scored on a wild pitch.  Shamansky flied out to center field and Banks scored for a 2-0 lead.

The Eagles got one in the bottom of the inning when Steve Foster walked and later stole second base.  And a little later, Scott Peiffer beat out an infield hit to score Ed Trump (who had gotten on base via an error.

The ‘Cats ,scored two more runs in the second. With one out, Eagle starter Mike Hoffman,' a 9th grader, walked Jeff Baker and. Mike Conrad. Conrad was then forced at

,second. base on Dave Cope's grounder. Wagner hit a fly ball over rightfielder Trump's head. Trump made a good try, running hard with his back to the diamond. He got his glove on the ball, but it fell and Wagner scored the two runners with a triple.

Hoffman walked banks and eagle Coach Tom Billman sent Jeff Pottinger to the mound.  With Wagner on third and Banks on first, Pottinger fanned the next batter to end the inning.

The Eagles had Rob Meier on third base in the third inning but could not bring him home. They were successful in the fourth.

Witl two outs, Pottinger went all the way to third on a throwing error to first base on his ground ball. Randy Rich singled him home. At the end of four innings, the Wildcats led, 4 –2.

The roof caved in on the Eagles in the fifth.  The “Cats scored nine runs, the big blows being Mike Warner's triple that knocked in Lowe and Shamansky and Lowe's double that scored Banks.

The Wildcats got three more runs on two high infield windblown pops. The wind lashed the field throughout the game. But the Eagles did not make excuses. It's part of the game. Shamansky hit a triple to left to score another run.  '

The Eagles got two runs in their last trips on errors.

Dave Cope went all the way for the 'Cats. He fanned seven batsmen and walked four.

Randy Foreman pitched the last inning for the Eagles.

The Wildcats have now won five of their last seven games.

The Eagles are now at .500, or 5-5 overall

Mechanicsburg won the junior varsity game, 3-2, scoring all its runs in the last inning.
