Baseball Team Ties For Second Place

The Mechanicsburg Wildcats varsity baseball team wound up the 1958 season with a record of 7 wins and 7 losses. They shared second place in the West Shore League with Camp Hill, Cumberland Valley and West Shore High Schools.

Ed Rife, varsity pitcher for three years and team captain this season, hurled shut-out games against West Shore and New Cumberland. Ed also led the team in hitting with .395 average.

Squad members winning letters this year were: Ed Rife, Dick Brandt, Bill Snyder, Ted Matsko, Dick Rohrer, Bob Gelwicks, Steve Shenk, Charles Slaybaugh, Fred Baker, Jim Sauve, and Dave Fisher.

Bill Snyder was second leading batter with an average of .386. Ted Matsko had a .325 average.

Extra base hits were clouted by Dick Brandt and Dave Fisher, each hitting two triples, and Dick Rohrer and Ed Rife, who each had two doubles.

Recognition Given Senior Athletes in Annual Spring Sports Awards Assembly

Baseball awards were presented by Mr. Cassel, who reviewed the 1958 season. Ed Rife, 1958 team captain, and Ted Matsko received monograms, awarded to those seniors who have participated in the same varsity sport for three consecutive years. Other team members who received letters were Charles Fisher, Gerry Harvey, Dave Fisher, Don Rife, Jim Sauve, Dick Rohrer, Bob Gelwicks, Dick Brandt, Bill Snyder, Steve Shenk, Fred Baker, and manager Bill Stough.
