1952 JUNIOR VARSITY BASEBALL
After losing their first two games of the 1952 season 6-0 and 8-1 to Carlisle and New Cumberland, the Junior Varsity baseball team played good ball, only to bow down to Edison and Carlisle by the identical one-run margins of 4-3.
Carlisle 6, MHS 0 - Mechanicsburg could collect only three hits from the Herd's hurler. Fickes was the losing pitcher.
New Cumberland 7, MHS 1 - New Cumberland helped the Wildkittens open the home season. Held hitless for the first seven innings by the tricky pitching of Mendy Merkel, the Cats retaliated in the seventh inning to score their first run of the year; however, the effort was in vain as the game ended 7-1 in favor of the Tigers. M-burg was led at the plate by Bill Baker who collected two safeties. Fickes again was the losing pitcher.
Recovering from four straight defeats, the Junior Cats, spurred by the one-hit pitching of Jack Quigley, fought to a 1-1 deadlock with Camp Curtin.
In their best game of the season, the Jayvees banged out 13 hits for 11 runs to defeat Edison 11-5 in the final game of the year.
Returning lettermen are Don Fought and Jim Dougherty. Other members of this year's team are as follows: Dan Wentz, Bill Baker, Don Kauffman, Ray Hoffman, Martin Myers, Don Potteiger, Bill Bittner, Corwin Sauve, Marlin Martin, Rick Shingler, Jim Davis, Dave Pentz, and Ed Fickes.
Although they won only one game, lost four, and tied one, the Jayvees improved greatly as the season progressed. Moving up from a shutout to an 11-run slugging contest was a real accomplishment.
