1928 VARSITY BASEBALL
For reasons unknown to us, Mechanicsburg Area High School did not assemble a baseball team during the year 1928. One possible reason might be that there were spring football practices at Mechanicsburg. The 1928 Torch (the yearbook at that time) noted that, "Baseball had been dropped earlier in the year."
The Torch provided the following sports summary for 1927-28.
FOOTBALL:
"Thirty-five boys, trained by three weeks of strenuous practice at Camp Lion, formed the material for the 1927 football eleven which carried the steel and maroon of M.H.S. to victory in all but two contests: State College 6-0 and Carlisle 12-9. The games won are as follows: Newville 74-0, Chambersburg 9-0, Lykens 78-6, Harrisburg Academy 19-6, Lemoyne 34-0, Shippensburg 18-0, New Cumberland 31-0."
TRACK:
"After the close of the football season, no athletics were sponsored at the High School until track season began. Baseball had been dropped earlier in the year.
The track candidates made a flying start but the ending of the season was not impressive. Through poor track facilities the team was unable to get the proper practices and therefore did not make so good a record at Carlisle as the material at hand merited. Coach Mercer believes, however, that if the local team would be supplied with proper conditions for the track the track men here would give any other county team at least ‘a run for their money.’
The question of whether the track teams that participated at Carlisle in the county meet would receive letters was not yet decided at the time this issue went to press."
TENNIS:
"The tennis season was also started with a rush but ended in less enthusiasm. A tournament was started, but lack of interest on the part of some of the entrants deadened the interest of many of the others and the time this issue was printed the opportunities for a successful ending of the tennis season looked bleak indeed."
SPRING FOOTBALL PRACTICES:
"Spring football training, a procedure usually used only in colleges, was officially adopted this year. Since the purpose of Spring training is only to limber up the players and keep them in the best physical condition all year round, strenuous work such as that done only before the start of football season is eliminated."
