Sam Martin who played first base in one game and in centerfield since Captain Derrick was injured, leads the high school players in batting average for the first three games of the season with Shorty Eckerd the diminutive but, never-the-less, crack short-stop and lead-off man, second.
Martin in eleven official trips to the plate had made six hits for an average of .545. Eckerd has made three hits in his nine official trips to the plate and stands second with an average of .333. Benny Fortney, who has taken part in only a little more than one game, made one hit in his three trips to the plate and therefore also has a batting average of .333.
Gusweiler who handles the pitchers has made two hits out of nine trips to the plate for an average of .222. which finds him fourth place in the batting averages. Weaver with two hits out of ten trips to the plate and Dougherty with one hit in five times up are tied with averages of .200 each.
